History records that the first stage line west of the Missouri was established in 1846. With the California gold rush in 1848, cross-country mail and passenger service was essential. By the early 1860's, there was a large number of stage lines in the West. In the mid-continent region, the Central Overland Mail and Express Company was the major carrier. Originally called the Central Overland California and Pikes Peak Express, this was the connecting link between the principal gold producing regions in the West. The mountainous terrain and arid regions were tough on horses, drivers and passengers. Teams of horses had to be replaced frequently under very adverse conditions. In the painting, Oleg catches a glimpse of the hustle and activity at a stage waystation. The lighting indicates either an early morning start or a late evening rush to make more miles. Whatever the situation, Oleg has done a masterful job in taking a routine everyday working scene and transforming it into an outstanding painting.
