"The Gypsy Horsetrader" features a travelin' horse trader familiar to many horse people of years past. These itinerants were often called gypsy horsetraders. Chuck tells about the many times he observed these men and wanted to paint his memories of them in action. "These were some pretty shrewd operators and I learned a lot about the horse business just watching them," Chuck said. According to Chuck, these gypsy horse traders traveled from place to place with their string of horses either by horseback or by wagon. Most stops were ranches or farms. They usually rode their poorest horse. In so doing they gave the impression it was their best. After all, wouldn't the seller always be on the best horse he had? In looking at the print, Chuck wants you to see the pained look on the horse's face. The horse is sore and gimpy and stepping lightly. Only to the well-trained eye will these things be evident. The unsuspecting buyer, on the other hand, will not be aware of the problems he might be buying.
