Unlike many artists who portray Indians in a more savage nature, Chuck captures the more gentle and spiritual side of people who have such a rich culture and history. Few cultures have been more profoundly religious than the Plains Indians, as displayed by this Crow Brave. He's watching intently to see if his offering is received by the spirits which he believes inhabit the depths of the stream that he and his paint horse will eventually have to cross. The Crows believed the water sheltered a multitude of mystic beings, including strange people as well as animal-like and monster-type spirits. The Crow's offering may have been an article of valuable clothing or a choice piece of meat. Note the Indian's simple bridle, which is his catch rope with a clove hitch run through the mouth. If the rider was thrown or otherwise detached from his mount, the long catch rope rein gave him an opportunity to regain control of the horse.
